Slide scanning

I have a lot of slides, which I'd like to have scanned for easier viewing.
For that reason I have my slides scanned in various ways.
1. Professional Service, Slide Scanner Nikon Coolscan 5000
2. Slide Scanner Nikon Coolscan 2
3. Epson Flatbed scanner
4. Photographing the slide from the screen using a slide projector

Equipment

1.Nikon Coolscan 5000
2.Nikon Coolscan 2
3.Epson Flatbed with slide mount
4.Nikon D40x, 50mm 1.8 / Leica Pradovit 300

Test Slides

I used the following two slides for my test:

The red squares define the area for the test-extracts.

Results

The scanning results are more or less dissapointing. Digital photographing produces better results than any slide scanner.
That said, here are the results:

NbrResultSettingsTime to capture a picturePrice
1.Springbok | Giraf4000dpi, 3520x5266, 1 way scan~1 minuteCHF 0.6/picture
2.Springbok | Giraf2700dpi, 2356x3528, 16 way scan~5 minutes
3.Springbok | Giraf4000dpi, 3425x5172~1 minute
4.Springbok | Giraf10Mpx~1 second
Note that the colors are not changed after the scan. Of course, settings have a massive influence!

Conclusion

1) and 2) produces the best results but at high cost and long scan time. 3) is not bad either but slow, whereas 4) is for free and fast!
It all depends on your needs, but don't by a slide scanner if you just want to view the images on the screen or make small prints. Use your existing equipment!!
